The Importance of an Education

When I was in high school, it was more or less just assumed that college was the next step after graduation.  But I didn’t go right away — in fact, I planned on never going to college, until I realized three and a half years later that I was stuck in a rut and education was the only way out.

There are a lot of people who question the need for college.  They complain about general education or core classes (”Why do I have to learn something that has absolutely nothing to do with my degree?”).  They point to all the jobs available to people without college degrees.

But the truth is, an education is necessary if you want to excel in your career.  Even in industries where college isn’t commonplace or expected, getting a degree can still help you — not by meeting basic requirements, but by putting you head and shoulders above the competition.

For instance, take the golf industry.  There are plenty of golf careers available, and many of them don’t require any college.  However, golf classes or a degree demonstrate your knowledge and expertise, reassuring employers (or clients, if you start your own business) that you really do have the knowledge and skills necessary to do the job.

For example, if you teach golf no one is going to want to hire you unless you can prove your expertise, correct?  And what better way to prove it than with a big fat degree on your resume?

So even if the career you want to pursue is something like a golf career, you still owe it to yourself — and your future — to get your education!
